Since March 2000, the former hospital in Nový Lískovec has been incorporated into St. Anne´s University Hospital Brno as its Convalescent and Rehabilitation Department.
Before World War I, a Retreat for Convalescents (Útulek pro rekonvalescenty) was built here, financed by the District Health Insurance Fund (formerly District Workers' Insurance Fund). In 1922-23, it housed 300 patients, prompting the insurance fund to acquire additional land and develop a comprehensive treatment centre with its own farm and housing for employees. A forest park with a swimming pool, solarium, women’s pavilion, bowling alley, sports courts, and a lookout was established on the hillside above Nový Lískovec. The architect of the complex was Čeněk Ruller. In 1937, construction began of a new three-storey Functionalist building, completed in 1939 but not utilized for its planned purpose owing to the war, when it became a German military hospital.
After the war, the facility was returned to the insurance fund but, owing to a lack of beds in Brno and its relatively high-quality equipment, it became a branch of the overburdened Zemská nemocnice (St. Anne's Hospital). The resort lost its spa character, and the original buildings were gradually demolished, leaving only the new sanatorium building and its administrative structures. Full hospital operations, including laboratory facilities and X-ray imaging, continued independently until the late 1990s. In March 2000, the hospital was integrated into the St. Anne´s University Hospital Brno as the Convalescent and Rehabilitation Department (DRO). A renovation of the former dining area and storerooms created a comprehensive balneotherapy suite equipped with a counter-current pool, whirlpools, and a new speech therapy unit. The DRO now has 115 beds in four units.
Since 2009, DRO has gained the status of a Specialized Medical Facility. In 2006, it was decided to return the forest park to the public and restore its unique structures – the lookout tower, the swimming pool, a footbridge across the ravine, and the Růžové návrší. The original project was found in the Nový Lískovec archive, and the Atelier Štěpán team carried out the restoration from 2010-12, winning the title Park of the Year in 2013. The park is now known as Masarykův háj, and the lookout tower is permanently open to the public.
