St. Anne’s University Hospital – Hansen’s Building and the Clausura
The Neo-Renaissance St Anne’s Hospital, designed by Theophil Hansen, is one of the most remarkable examples of 19th-century architecture in Brno.
The prominent main façade facing Pekařská Street leads to well-preserved corridors and a central courtyard.
The Clausura, a modest building near the entrance from Mendel Square (the Křížová Gate), originally served as accommodation for nuns. A chapel was established on the first floor, featuring vibrant stained glass windows that reflect early 20th-century Modernist design. The flooring retains intricate details, with grey tiles displaying a central white Greek cross, bordered by continuous frames with stylized floral patterns.
The original structure, built between 1907 and 1909, was expanded northwards during the Second World War and unified with a decorative plaster layer known as lincrusta. In 1990, a gatehouse was added. While the façade has recently been restored, the chapel now serves as a lecture hall, a function it has fulfilled since the latter half of the 20th century.
