The Faculty of Business and Economics at Mendel University in Brno (PEF MENDELU) was founded in 1959, making it the oldest faculty of economics in Moravia.
The faculty was established by government decree, which came into effect on 1 September 1959, as part of a reorganization of higher agricultural education in Czechoslovakia. This reorganization also led to a change in the university’s name, removing the reference to forestry. Later the mention of agriculture was also dropped, and today the faculty is one of five at Mendel University in Brno. In 2011 and 2014 PEF MENDELU was recognized as the best Faculty of Economics in Moravia and the third best in the Czech Republic.
Construction of Building Q began in 2002 and it was completed two years later, in 2004, becoming the new home of the Faculty of Business and Economics. The building, shared with the Faculty of AgriSciences, is located within the existing university campus in a visually prominent position above the city centre, in close proximity to the Tugendhat House. Pavilion Q is fully air-conditioned, with lecture halls equipped with state-of-the-art multimedia technology and classrooms offering access to cutting-edge information and communication technologies. The building, which was designed by Atelier Chlup, was awarded the Building of the Year 2005 prize.
Over its 63 years of existence, PEF MENDELU has produced more than 20,000 graduates. The faculty offers all three levels of higher education in both Czech and English. Its graduates find employment in such fields as economics, management, commerce, finance, public administration and as designers of information systems. Currently, the faculty has nearly 3,000 students.
