This exceptional space, connecting history, the present, and the future, as well as science and faith, was created on the foundations of the original Mendel Greenhouse at the Augustinian Abbey.
The recently completed Mendel Greenhouse, built in 2022 to mark the 200th anniversary of G. J. Mendel’s birth, was designed by the architectural studio Chybík+Kristof (architects Ondřej Chybík, Michal Krištof, Ondřej Švancara, Kryštof Foltýn, Ingrid Spáčilová, and Laura Emilija Druktenyté). Its design follows the footprint and orientation of the original greenhouse at the Brno Augustinian Abbey, where G. J. Mendel conducted his pea experiments that laid the scientific foundations of genetics.
Visually simple yet structurally and technologically sophisticated, the glazed building relies on a construction system with a large number of components. This approach allows for an exceptionally delicate structure that enables the greenhouse to harmoniously blend with its surroundings.
Although peas will still be grown in aeroponic pots within the new greenhouse, the project’s primary goal was to create a multifunctional facility. It serves as a space for a permanent exhibition of Mendel’s legacy and can host conferences, lectures, banquets, exhibitions, and concerts.
