The building now housing the KUMST Creative Hub has a rich history: it has served as an academic canteen, a cinema for builders, an art school, and a gallery. Today, KUMST supports those who want to make a living from their creativity—whether architects, designers, graphic artists, or game developers. Creators even have their own studios within the hub.
The KUMST Creative Hub occupies a protected building from the late 1930s, designed by architect Vinzenz Baier. The complex has a total of 4,000 m² of floor space across two four-storey buildings. The original administrative building was adapted for its new purpose by the architectural studio KOGAA. The renovation was not a superficial overhaul; the distinctive character of the building was preserved, while more natural light was introduced. Unique glass blocks (luxfery), long hidden above lowered ceilings, were restored. Walls added during the building’s many functional changes were removed to open up the space.
The renovated complex now includes a showroom for local creators, a café, a large hall for social and educational events, a shared courtyard, shared conference rooms, and three floors of studios, ateliers, and co-working spaces for the creative community.
The exterior courtyard façade remains largely unchanged from the time of the Faculty of Fine Arts, with graffiti and wall paintings often serving as a tribute to former art students. The current interior furnishings were designed by Denisa Strmisková, a renowned interior designer known for projects such as the Long Story Short hostel in Olomouc.
