The Great Synagogue was the largest Jewish place of worship in Brno, located at the corner of today’s Spálená and Přízova streets. Built in 1853–1855 in a historicist Neo-Romanesque style, it served as a key religious and social centre for the city’s Jewish community.

The synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis in March 1939 and later completely demolished. The site has remained empty ever since, marked only by a small memorial on a nearby building.

Today, the place is being gradually rediscovered. Archaeological research began in 2026 to uncover the synagogue’s foundations, and new plans aim to commemorate its history and restore its presence in the memory of the city.
