The Railway Workers’ Quarter is located in the north-western part of Řečkovice. It is formed by several main streets – Jandáskova, Královka and Jehnická – which are crossed by Železničářská and Luh. All of them are connected by a small network of narrow inner lanes, typical for garden colonies.
The quarter was built mainly in the interwar period, after railway workers returned from Vienna back to Řečkovice. In total, 32 family houses and one small apartment building were constructed. This apartment house is today considered the central building of the quarter. Most of the houses were designed by Karel Nedozrál and share many similar features – for example different window styles, the same crowning cornice, or similar entrance doors. At the same time, you can also find some Neo-Baroque elements, such as volute gables.
The villa of actress Vlasta Müllerová is a unique architectural feature not only in Řečkovice, but in Brno as well. The house was designed by architect Emil Straka for his partner (later wife). It is likely that the rich decoration of both the exterior and interior was created by Dušan Jurkovič, as he was a friend of Straka, although this has not been fully confirmed. The exterior combines elements of vernacular and Art Nouveau architecture, with simple decoration inspired by carved wood.
During the guided tour, visitors will also see photographs of the original interior, as the furniture was custom-made as part of the design. The current owners have helped to preserve it in very good condition.
