Masaryk University, Faculty of Sports Studies – Gymnasium “Pod Hradem” is a Neo-Gothic sports hall originally built for the German gymnastics association Brünner Turnverein in 1868. The building, inspired by North German brick architecture, combines red brick masonry with black ornamental detailing. The design was created by August Prokop, a native of Jihlava, and the construction was carried out by the prominent Brno builder Josef Arnold.
After a major fire in September 1877, the building was reconstructed according to Prokop’s original plans. A more difficult chapter in its history followed after 1945, when the courtyard of the gymnasium was used for public executions of Brno Germans.
From an architectural point of view, the building is notable for its stepped gables, recessed niches with pointed arches, and painted decoration. The interior is dominated by a two-flight staircase with net vaulting and a main hall that extends into the exposed roof structure, reminiscent of an inverted ship’s hull or a church nave. A distinctive feature is also the timber coffered ceiling.
Since the 1950s, the building has served as a sports centre of Masaryk University, and since 3 May 1958 it has been protected as a listed cultural monument.
