The Old Town Hall is Brno’s oldest and most remarkable secular building, showcasing architectural styles from early Gothic through late Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. It is one of the city’s most important cultural monuments and a key urban landmark.
Throughout its history, the building served as the city hall, hosting the town council and courts, welcoming distinguished guests, and even organising the city’s defence in times of danger. The tower, crowned with a late-Gothic portal and observation gallery, is a striking feature of Brno’s skyline.
The Old Town Hall is also full of fascinating stories and legends. Visitors can see the legendary Brno Dragon, the crooked pinnacle whose tilt has its own tale, and the mysterious “walled-in councillor.” In the courtyard, a historic wheel is said to have an intriguing origin story.
Today, the Old Town Hall is mainly a cultural venue. It hosts exhibitions and concerts, operates the city’s tourist information centre, and opens several of its historic rooms to the public, including the Ernův Hall, the Fresco Hall, the Crystal Hall, and the so-called Treasury. In 2024, the building was officially designated a National Cultural Monument.
