Sokol Brno I is located in a large Functionalist complex that combines a Sokol hall with the Stadion Community Centre, featuring a concert and events hall, a sports hall, a gymnasium and a restaurant.
The Sokol Hall and the Stadion Community Centre on Kounicova Street offer sports and physical-activity programmes for people of all ages. The Sokol organisation promotes a well-rounded physical, mental and social development of its members and the wider public.
The beginnings of the Sokol movement in Brno date back to the 19th century, when the first Czech physical-education association in the region was founded. As its activities grew, new facilities became necessary. The current site was gradually developed in the early 20th century as a place for sport, community life and cultural events.
The complex was designed in the spirit of Functionalism and originally included gymnasiums, a community and concert hall, a cinema and a restaurant with a terrace. For many years, it also housed a broadcasting studio.
During the second half of the 20th century, the interiors were altered and expanded. Today, the Stadion Community Centre continues to serve as an important venue for sport and cultural life in Brno. It offers a sports hall, gymnasiums, a fencing hall, a climbing wall and outdoor sports areas. A long-term renovation of the complex has been under way since 2016, including the creation of a new children’s centre and the refurbishment of the entrance hall and memorial room.
