The legendary Brno Avion Hotel, located on Česká street, is the narrowest hotel building in Europe and one of the city’s most famous symbols of interwar Functionalism.
In 1926, the restaurateur Miroslav Kostelecký decided to modernize his establishment on Česká street and, on the site of a modest tavern, commissioned the architect Bohuslav Fuchs to design an eight-storey hotel. His creation serves as a textbook of modern architecture, allowing one to literally touch the principles of Modernism as defined by Le Corbusier in the 1920s. Recently the hotel underwent extensive reconstruction and, after many years, is once again open and ready to captivate visitors with the unique space created by Fuchs in 1928 on this challenging narrow plot.
Thanks to the innovative design of the façade, the generous, light-filled spaces, large windows, and the use of sophisticated reinforced concrete construction, Avion is an exceptional building well deserving its place on the list of Czech cultural heritage sites. Above the central entrance to the café, framed by the curved shop windows of the restaurant and hotel reception, is the Avion Hotel logo by Emanuel Hrbek. Besides being the narrowest hotel in Europe, with its height of 40 metres it is the tallest building in Brno's city centre.
In addition to a museum, the hotel offers a café with a restaurant and, of course, exclusive accommodation with stunning views of the city. The new owner also provides guided tours of the interior and permanent exhibitions dedicated to Bohuslav Fuchs.
