The Baroque Palace of the Abbot of the Žďár monastery, constructed in 1752-53 according to a design by the father-and-son team of Moritz and Franz Anton Grimm, is an important architectural landmark and a key element in the historic urban space of Zelný trh.
The palace remained in the possession of the monastery until 1784, when it was dissolved, and ownership of the building changed. In the 19th century, an additional floor was added, and the building was altered in a pseudo-Baroque style. Finally, in 1904, its new owner, Josef Lídl – a manufacturer of musical instruments – established it as the headquarters for his company.
The palace deteriorated over the last sixty years. Prior to its reopening in November 2018, a complete reconstruction was necessary, which was no simple task: since 1958, the palace has been listed as a cultural heritage site. Every minor alteration had to be consulted with the heritage preservation institute. Original Baroque windows, murals, and plasterwork – all had to be carefully preserved during the reconstruction. The aim of the extensive restoration was not only to return the palace to its original appearance but also to breathe new life into it. Today, the palace houses various businesses, including the Hotel Anybody.
