The Besední dům, home to the Brno Philharmonic, is one of the most important buildings in Brno’s historic centre. It has hosted the work of the extraordinary composer and conductor Leoš Janáček.
The neorennaissance palace was built between 1871 and 1873 to serve Czech cultural and social societies in Brno. Designed by Viennese architect Theophil Hansen—also responsible for the Musikverein in Vienna—it features a grand main hall known as the Golden Hall, famous today for classical concerts. Early occupants included Sokol and Beseda brněnská, where Janáček began his career.
Since 1957, the Brno Philharmonic has managed the building, which underwent major renovations to preserve its historic charm. Key features include a balcony once used as a political podium, and rehearsal rooms such as the Kantiléna choir hall, where soprano Magdalena Kožená trained. In 2023, the Besední dům celebrated 150 years since its opening.
