The Department of Transfusion and Tissue Medicine is located in Building I2 on the Bohunice campus of Brno University Hospital. It is the largest facility of its kind in the Czech Republic, producing more than 50,000 transfusion products each year.

The history of the department dates back to 1949, when the first transfusion station in Brno was established at the premises of St. Anne’s University Hospital Brno. In 1958 it moved to Tomešova Street on Žlutý kopec, and since 2002 it has been based at Brno University Hospital.

During the tour of the Department of Transfusion and Tissue Medicine, we will follow the journey of blood from the donor’s arrival at the department through the collection itself to processing, storage and distribution. The tour begins in the donor hall, which underwent extensive renovation in 2025 and now provides comfortable facilities for blood donor registration, electronic completion of forms, refreshments and a cloakroom.

The interior is designed in red and white, with a central red floor line that visually guides donors towards the room where blood samples are taken and to the examination room. The donor’s route then continues to the collection hall, where whole blood donations take place as well as apheresis procedures for collecting plasma and platelets.

We will then proceed to the processing section, where the blood is separated into its individual components, and the tour concludes in the dispatch area, where all transfusion products are stored before being distributed to individual hospital departments.
