Biology Park Brno is a scientific and technical park in Brno focusing on biotechnology and biomedicine. It is situated on Studentská street, within the campus of Masaryk University – the largest university campus in Central Europe.
The modern biomedical industry centre is notable for its construction design as well as its precisely structured facade. A Plus architects approached the design of the building without a specific remit, treating it as an opportunity for scientific research. The structure is designed to offer a versatile space that can be easily adapted to the needs of future tenants. The multifunctional building received the 2015 award for the Best Building in the South Moravian Region. It links up to the ealier Biomedical Technology Incubator INBIT, the CEITEC Central European Technology Institute pavilion, and the SIMU Simulation Centre. The Centre for Translational Medicine (CTM) is part of the International Clinical Research Centre FNUSA and the Medical Faculty of Masaryk University (ICRC).
The biotechnology park structure consists of one underground and four above-ground floors. The building’s design was influenced by the steep slope of the land and existing roadways. A characteristic feature of this multifunctional building is the console-projected mass of the structure on a supporting column. This column also functions as a vertical communication element with elevators and distribution networks. The supporting structure consists of a truss wall construction with peripheral beams from which the individual floors are suspended. The entire mass of the object is based on a single support – the supporting column. This solution allows the building to be designed as an open space without internal columns. The result is a multifunctional building where any function can be placed – from clinical medicine to basic research and light manufacturing.
The basic purpose of Biology Park Brno is to support competitiveness and the transfer of research and development results in the field of biomedical and biotechnological applications to the market, with a focus on fostering the transfer of knowledge and technologies between higher education institutions and business entities. It also offers modern laboratory, research, and office spaces. The CTM utilizes laboratory spaces on the second floor of the building.
