The interwar building originally referred to familiarly as Kumpošt’s shelter, now serves as the Brno-North District town hall, still preserving elements of its former genius loci.
Built in 1924 by the Brno Building Office on Bratislavská street, the shelter was designed by the architect Jindřich Kumpošt as an emergency solution for people without a home or in financial distress. In the context of the minimal housing issue, which was widely addressed by architects during the housing crisis, this represented an extreme case—a facility intended to provide at least basic social support and a bed for those in need.
The simple brick-faced structure was divided into separate sections for men and women, each with its own entrance from the street. Across four floors, each section housed three spacious dormitories, large washrooms, and sanitary facilities.
Today, the building has been adapted by the Brno-North District for administrative purposes. This included an insensitive refurbishment of interior spaces, a two-storey extension, and modifications to the ground floor, featuring a central main entrance.
