Since its establishment in 2016, the Office of the Brno City Architect (Kancelář architekta města Brna, KAM) has been headquartered in one of the buildings of the Little Špalíček at Zelný trh.
The Little Špalíček was originally a group of four separate Gothic and Renaissance-era houses, unified into a cohesive Baroque complex in the seventeenth century by the Brno architect Jan Křtitel Erna. This group of buildings, of exceptional historical value, underwent a comprehensive and costly renovation between 1969 and 1973.
Each of the buildings forming the Little Špalíček is individually protected as a cultural monument. In the case of the building at Zelný trh 13, where the Office of the Brno City Architect is located, the heritage value lies particularly in its façade. This highly significant townhouse, with its Renaissance core built upon medieval foundations, underwent multiple architectural modifications in later periods.
The office brings together architects, urban planners, engineers, sociologists, and geographers, whose primary focus is on urban planning for Brno and the design of its public spaces. One of KAM's key roles is the preparation of Brno’s official City Plan. The office is also responsible for organising architectural and urban planning competitions and actively involving the public in planning and decision-making processes concerning the city’s development.
