Moravian Land Archives in Brno is among the most important archival institutions in the Czech Republic and at the same time represents an outstanding example of contemporary public architecture. Its history dates back to 1839, when it was established as the provincial archive for Moravia. The present-day form of the complex in the Bohunice district opens a new chapter in its development.
Completed in 2007, the modern archival complex combines state-of-the-art technologies for preserving historical documents with high-quality contemporary architecture. Its repositories safeguard more than a millennium of Moravian written heritage and serve both researchers and the general public.
The architectural concept is based on a clear separation of operational and public areas. The compact volumes of the repositories — designed with an emphasis on stable microclimatic conditions, security, and the long-term protection of archival collections — contrast with the more open and light-filled spaces of the entrance hall, reading rooms, and administrative facilities.
As part of Open House Brno, you will have a unique opportunity to explore spaces that are usually inaccessible and to experience the architecture of a building conceived with a strong focus on functionality, sustainability, and a cultivated relationship with its surroundings. The tour will conclude with views from the archive’s roof garden.
Building of the Year 2008. As part of the accompanying programme, visitors can also watch short films about the work of archivists and view photographs and plans documenting the construction of the building.
