The Mahen Memorial was established in 1992 to commemorate the life and work of Jiří Mahen, while also realising his vision of the library as a cultural and community centre.
It is located on Mahenova Street in the villa where the Brno writer, journalist, dramaturge, and first director of the Brno Municipal Library lived. On the ground floor, visitors will find a library with an extensive collection and advanced library services. The first floor houses a museum dedicated to Jiří Mahen, featuring a number of unique exhibits and a reconstructed study. Literature lovers, theatre enthusiasts, antique collectors, and even fishing aficionados will find something to enjoy here. The attic offers modern spaces for conferences and exhibitions.
The Mahen Memorial underwent extensive renovation and was reopened to the public in March 2019. Traces of Jiří Mahen can be found throughout the exhibition, including his original study furnished by architect Jan Vaněk, as well as in the library space fitted with period furniture.
Today, the Memorial regularly hosts lectures, author readings, exhibitions, theatre performances, and creative writing courses. The library at the Memorial is part of the Jiří Mahen Library network.
