Since 1993, the Pavel Křížkovský Grammar School with an Artistic Focus has been combining high-quality general education with unique artistic training. It is housed in the former Jubilee Primary School building in Komín.
The former Jubilee Primary School was established to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The initiative for its founding came from the then-headmaster Karel Anděl. The school was built in just two years (1908–09) based on designs by the prominent Moravian architect Antonín Blažek. The builder, T. Němeček from Žabovřesky, completed the construction precisely on schedule, and the school was formally opened on 29 August 1909. The school building originally housed not only seven classrooms, four staff rooms, a teachers’ lounge, and the head teacher’s flat but also the municipal office. Its original educational purpose has remained unchanged. Since 1993, it has been home to the Pavel Křížkovský Grammar School, founded by František Pospíšil.
The building is a remarkable example of early 20th-century architecture, featuring elements of classical Modernism, Viennese Secession, and folklorism. The school’s significance lies primarily in the preservation of numerous authentic interior details, such as original ceramic-tiled corridors with a scalloped carpet-like pattern, wrought-iron railings in a Secessionist style, and the furnishings of the chemistry classroom. A striking feature is its highly distinctive façade and urban placement on the northern edge of the historic street, close to the church and next to the parish house of the Komín district.
Today, Pavel Křížkovský Grammar School with an Artistic Focus is a private secondary school that integrates general and artistic studies into a single programme. Both students and teachers regularly perform in public. The school’s most successful students include those from the fine arts department, who not only exhibit their work at their own private viewings but also display it in galleries, hospitals, hospices, offices, and other public spaces. Many of the school’s graduates go on to study humanities at various universities.
