The Theatre on Orlí Street opened in October 2012 as a new performance space of the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU), offering Brno a versatile venue for contemporary art.
The modern building, designed by Brno architects Pavel Rada and Milan Rak, fills a gap between two older apartment buildings. Historic cellars were preserved and integrated into the new structure. The theatre combines a street-facing public section with a taller block containing the theatre hall and teaching spaces, partially covered with greenery. An outdoor vestibule connects the theatre, café, and school, providing a welcoming entrance space.
The reinforced concrete building has white concrete panels on the street façade, decorated with a musical motif inspired by the theatre’s programme. Inside, colours help visitors navigate different functional areas.
The theatre serves JAMU students from the Music and Theatre Faculties, providing a professional environment for opera, musicals, and other music-theatre forms. It is equipped with modern stage, sound, and lighting technology, and teaching is mainly hands-on, with students producing their final-year performances.
