The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute in Brno was purpose-built according to a design by architect Zdeněk Michal and is located on Kroftova Street in the Žabovřesky district.
The building houses one of the institute’s seven branches, a national institution responsible for meteorology, climatology, hydrology, water quality and air quality. The branch began operating immediately after the building was completed. Due to space constraints, an extension was added in the mid-1970s, with further expansion in 2001 designed by Atelier Hrůša and partners.
The Brno branch conducts continuous monitoring of the atmosphere and hydrosphere, observing both immediate changes and long-term developments. Its activities are overseen by the branch director and carried out by specialised departments focused on air quality, hydrology, water quality, meteorology, agrometeorology, climatology and agroclimatology.
