Brno is constantly changing! Come and discover the city in a “current of transformation” at Open House Brno 2026

The transformation of urban space in Brno is reflected in its many historical layers and thematic dimensions, which shape the emergence of new buildings, reconstructions and redevelopments, and in some cases also the demolition of original structures. This year’s Open House Brno 2026 therefore carries the title “In a Current of Change.” As part of the concept, the locations have been divided into five thematic circuits that present key milestones in the city’s modern architectural development and offer different ways of reading it — from historical layers to areas such as culture, sport, and healthcare. Use these circuits as inspiration for how to explore the festival, and approach this year’s locations through this perspective.

In a Current of Industrialisation

The first circuit follows the period when Brno was profoundly shaped by industrialisation in the 19th and first half of the 20th century. At that time, the city grew in direct connection with industry, which defined both its physical form and social structure.

This circuit includes, for example, the former Mosilana complex, as well as Nová Zbrojovka and Vlněna.

It also features buildings with different functional purposes, such as the Municipal Baths in Zábrdovice or the Workers’ House in Židenice.

The circuit is complemented by the walk “In the Footsteps of Brno’s Industrial History,” led by Hynek Zbranek. The meeting point is at the former Karl Příza factory at Cejl 10. The walk takes place on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at 13:30 and 15:30, lasting 45–60 minutes.

Reservations are available via the fairplay.events portal.

In a Current of the Ring Road

The second circuit focuses on the Ring Road, which was built on the site of the former city fortifications and represents one of the most significant interventions into the structure of Brno’s historic centre.

Along this route you will find, for example, the University Hospital of St. Anne, the Besední dům, or the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic. Each of these buildings represents a different layer of public life that gradually settled into the space of the former fortifications.

The circuit is complemented by the walk “Malinovského Square as a Chronicle of the City,” led by Romana Horáková from the House of Arts in Brno. The meeting point is in front of the House of Arts at Malinovského Square on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 17:00. The walk lasts 60 minutes.

Reservations are available via the fairplay.events portal.

Healthcare is also the focus of the lecture “240th Anniversary of the University Hospital of St. Anne in Brno,” delivered by Martin Pešl from Open House Brno. The lecture takes place on Sunday, May 17, at 11:00 in the large lecture hall of building O1 above the Atria café (accessible by lift opposite the bistro to the third floor) and lasts 60 minutes.

Reservations are available via the fairplay.events portal.

In a Current of Greater Brno

The third circuit returns to the year 1919, when surrounding municipalities were incorporated into the city, creating so-called Greater Brno. This moment fundamentally changed the scale of the city and opened up space for new architecture and urban thinking.

Among the buildings in this circuit are Kino Lucerna Brno and the Supreme Court, originally built as a pension insurance institution.

In a Current of the Exhibition City

The fourth circuit is dedicated to the Brno Exhibition Grounds (Veletrhy Brno), which since its opening in 1928 has significantly influenced the city’s urban development. The exhibition centre has not only served as a venue for events, but also as a long-term catalyst for the development of its surrounding area.

This circuit includes, for example, the Velodrome, Hotel Continental, and the Bauer Chateau.

It is complemented by the walk “Transport Structures and Engineering at the Brno Exhibition Grounds,” led by the exhibition architect Lenka Štěpánková. The walks take place on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 10:30, 11:30, and 12:30. The meeting point is at the underpass by the main entrance to the grounds, and the walk lasts 20–30 minutes.

Reservations are available via the fairplay.events portal.

In a Current of Planning and Masterplans

The fifth circuit focuses on the second half of the 20th century, when Brno’s development began to be guided by systematic planning. During this period, the city was shaped by urban and master plans that determined its further growth.

This selection includes, for example, the Janáček Theatre, the Rubín Cultural Centre, and a walk through the Lesná housing estate.

The circuit is complemented by the walk “Mariánské Square and Surroundings – The New Centre of Komárov,” led by Tomáš Dvořák, architect of the Brno-Jih district, and Jakub Holas, its deputy mayor. The walk takes place on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at 11:00. The meeting point is in front of the Brno-Jih District Office, and the walk lasts 60 minutes.

Reservations are available via the fairplay.events portal.
