The Community Bicycle Workshop (BKB) is a space open to everyone, offering bicycle repairs and teaching these skills to others. It aims to foster a sustainable and inclusive community in a gentrifying part of Brno, actively contributing to social change.
BKB is located in a corner building on Přízova street, named in 1946 after Karel Příza, Brno’s first Czech textile entrepreneur, who also supported social initiatives for his workers. The workshop occupies the left section of the ground floor in a historic urban house, featuring preserved architectural elements such as window mouldings and cornices.
The goal of BKB is to support urban cycling, promote sustainable living and transport, and empower people to develop skills in bicycle repair and manual work. To achieve this, BKB prepares vegan meals, shares bicycles and tools, and makes decisions collectively through monthly open plenums without a hierarchical structure.
They focus on town plannng and the accessibility of public spaces, striving to ensure spaces remain inclusive and available to everyone. BKB actively opposes gentrification, particularly on Přízova street, and its impact on neighbourhoods. The group maintains close contact with the local community through cultural events and support for diverse interests.
Visitors are invited to see how BKB operates, gain insights into Brno's cycling community, and observe their decision-making processes, food preparation, and space management. Individual guided tours led by volunteers are available, offering a closer look into their work. Visitors can also seek help with bike repairs, enjoy vegan treats, and watch short films on cycling themes.
The BKB space invites everyone to become part of this vibrant and socially conscious community.
